Dungeons & Dragons 2: Introduction
OK - here's some fun. As I mentioned before, this isn't based on an original idea of mine, but on the old 80's cartoon of the same name. If you don't remember it, 6 American kids get thrown through a portal in a fairground ride into a weird Lord of the Ringsy world, they're all given magical weapons by Dungeon Master, they adopt an annoying baby unicorn and they have to go on a series of adventures, mainly battling a scary assed demon bloke called Venger in the attempt to get back to Earth. I personally don't really remember watching it as a little girl (it terrified me, I can recall that much!) but I got the 1st DVD for Hubby's birthday and really got into it - it's the one fantasy cartoon from my childhood I can think of where the 'heroes' have decent character flaws and freely admit they have no idea what they're doing.
These scripts came out of a conversation with Hubby about how it could be done now. I had read an unmade script which was intended to be the last episode called 'Requiem'. It is about on the web and very very good. The jist of it is that there's an almighty last fight which results in Venger returning to his old, non-evil self. It's revealed that Venger is Dungeon Master's son and the kids are given the opportunity to go home. 'The Call Home' begins 7 years after that.
For any of you that are big fans of the old series, there are, I know, a few plot holes. Yes, even though the leads were in their mid teens in the early 80's, they now exist in the present (mid Noughties) and yet are only seven years older. This is simply because I want them to be modern kids, not have to worry about what was around and what wasn't if I set their time as the early 90's. Also, the cartoon suggested that all the time they'd been stuck in the Realm, only a few hours had passed in the real world. But while they spend seven years in the real world, seven years also pass in the Realm. I choose to explain how this happened as 'Magic'. Also, sometimes people sing well known songs. I may have got some of the words wrong, but I figured if I write what I think I hear in songs, the characters can be singing what they think they heard themselves! If I've made any more mistakes, sorry, but I got kind of caught up with my own ideas. Yes, some of the characters have changed, but people change, especially after traumatic experiences. Also, unlike the cartoon, these scripts have story arcs which span many episodes, so it's best to read them in chronological order.
A few words of warning: These scripts contain a lot of swearing (some of it extreme - I'm not afraid of the C-word), the taking of drugs, alcohol misuse, bloody violence and sexual references. It is therefore unsuitable for younger readers. Although huge fans of the little bald guy and the big blond guy should be warned that they're in for a bumpy ride too.
Enjoy!
